Philippines

Top 5 spots in the Philippines

Sabang, Palawan: with a white sandy beach, a bay great for snorkelling, and the subterrean River NP at the door step.

Sagada, North Luzon: a tranquil place surrounded by colourful rice terraces.

Donsol, South Luzon: the place where you can have close encounters with the biggest fish on our planet, the whale shark. Except for me, because I didn’t see any after three attempts.

Nuts Huts, Bohol: a paradise next to the Loboc River and primary forest of Raja Sikatuna NP.

Mt Mayon, South Luzon: A better example of a perfect round shape of a volcano you cannot find. Although I wasn’t able to see it, because thick clouds hid the volcano for days.

To party or to ‘nature’?

Sometimes you have that feeling to party so much and when you arrive in Boracay, it’s said that you really won’t be able to escape it even. As I ended up staying in the friendly and laid back ‘Tree House’ I missed out on all the parties, but that was all fine. The white sandy beach and magical sunsets were in fact enough to keep me busy. An island without nature (read: forest, wetlands, etc.) and it kept me there for a few days. I was stunned about my capabilities to stay here. Was I changed? I think I should not even look for an answer. It seems that I just got better in ‘hanging around’ without any kind of goal. Yes, so I was fine not to have both, nature and parties in the end.

The discovery of the less traveled Panay main island was an exciting exploration. Waterfalls and national parks without tourists! Unfortunately due to lack of government these parks are neglected. My guide who also works as a proper park ranger in Bulabog Putia NP was facto dito a volunteer. The money he earns is the compulsary guide fee every tourist pays. The are many caves to see, so it is maube a good idea to have a guide anyway. Someone who can point out animals and plants. My guide wasn’t really talkative, a guy who is maybe 24, didn’t seem to enjoy it. He also missed out to point out the many insects, spiders and reptiles… Can you believe that? I didn’t seem to get clear answers more than a ‘yes sir’… No I still don’t know if it is a lack of education, motivation or an overkill of routine. The money he earns can definitely not be to motivating. I was intrigued, but my determination in finding answers turned me in a sort of dissappointment. I enjoyed walking in the caves and the many animal sightings. At the end of the trail we passed some litte rubbish land fills (tiny ones of 1 square meter), but what it is doing in the national park? It was the last questions I took back with me. In the jeepney I had a strange feeling. If this get touristy then for sure there will be money to maintain the park better. Tourists would not be allowed to see litter in a big tourist draw. As Panay isn’t the tourist draw, stuff will stay as it is. Rice fields, friendly people, nice spots to see and to stay and a disillusioned Amar 🙂
