Australia – Life in Perth

Days in Perth

The main question is how my day looks like! The morning and afternoon I spend in the library. Here I have internet allowing me all the time to apply for jobs. With one break in the hostel to cook my lunch. Tuesday and friday are the days to go for a walk or a day trip in the many nearby (national) parks.

A German girl, Tanja, is an au pair her in Perth. Tanja is a Couch Surfer who has surfed my couch back home in 2009 and coincidentally we are now in the same city. She can borrow the car and together we went to a number of national parks where I saw my first kangaroos.

In the weekends, everyone is free. That’s the best opportunity to go out with the Germans and Luke. Recently we were in Whiteman Park, Swan Valley and Fremantle. Especially the wine valley was very cool with its vineyards and the meandering Swan River.

Two weeks ago I visited Margaret River. Here we climbed overlooking beautiful beaches and steep cliffs. The area hosts abundant animals and plants, since this is the place with a high biodiversity.

LEGO club!

In Perth I also found the LEGO club. The active members gather every Sunday in the northern suburb of the city. One of the members of the Lego club in Perth (PALS) has built a big shed where we can build together. Now I’m a full member with my own project: building a train station and helping to build the tallest building of Perth. To get an impression of Perth and the LEGO club, visit my photo page.

What to do in and around Perth?

In the region there’s plenty to do try this out. Beautiful coastal areas, beaches, and islands waiting to be discovered. Most I haven’t seen yet, so pleanty of things remain to do in and around Perth. Public transport is also very good. The trains run on time and frequent. The buses connect to each other and they run regularly. It also seems that public transport will be further expanded. Something I support.

Nazis, French, Germans, and clubs

Police is basically the same as Nazis here. If you’re brown or black or aboriginal, you are definitely the losers. Your identity will be checked and you’ll get questioned. That happened to me, but obviously I didn’t have ID with me. So that was a whole discussion which resulted that I finally could continue to walk undisturbed.

In the club I was denied because I was wearing “sneakers”. The French guy was refused, because he has longer hair. The Germans came in, but after they had smoked outside, they could no longer re-enter the club. Just because they took an alcohol test which proved to be too high for entering the club. Such a hypocritical mess.

The next week we decided to give the club another chance. As I almost could have expected they refused me, because I had no passport with me. Well, they ask for ID, so that could be anything from passport, identity card to drivers licence. Isn’t it insane to be in a club with your passport? From now on I don’t put a step in the doorway of a restaurant, pub, club or cafe.

I can tell you that these “incidents” are not so helpful in liking the country as such. The country gets a second chance. Marjolein is visiting me in April, so by that time I hope to have found my way in Down Under.

Travel plan

Day trips! To Rockingham, Margaret River, Yanchep NP and Rottnest Island. On 11 March I am going to Sydney to travel together with Marjolein. We should be in Perth on 7 April.
