The research project
I guess I haven’t really mentioned before that I changed my professor, research institute, and PhD project in March. To make a long story short; the professor did not seem to be the person he pretended to be. I had basically no freedom of what I wanted to write, when I wanted to do research, when to do field work, etc. That lead to serious problems when we had our weekly meetings. After 6 weeks I had enough of this and with help of the university I changed my supervision to my current professor, Anas. My project is someting I’ve created myself which suits me best. So in a nutshell: My reseach project is currently within the Co-operative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CRC) funded by Government. The goal is to provide water livable cities which take into account for all social, economic, and environmental aspects in a city. My project is about using wetlands in Perth as flood prevention measure in the urban planning process which 1. conserves wetlands and 2. helps to find solutions on a local, regional, and city scale for flood resilience.
As part of the CRC we went for a research skills workshop in the Sunshine Coast. Information about that is here. I was also interviewed, see video.
The next meeting will be held in October in Melbourne which will last for a week. The best part is that all funding comes from the CRC project group! So, my scholarship allowance may be used in a later stage to go to Europe if I’m in need of help of one of the CRC partner organisations (42 in total).
If you’re curious what a wetland is, or why on earth we should protect these imporant ecosystems, then I recommend to have a look here! Most of them are located in the urban area and surrounded by houses. I think I’ve visited about 50% of them by now and some wetlands are internationally protected. So there are plenty of photos to follow.
