Update from Perth

We got our tenancy agreement

In the meantime we managed to get the house, rental agreement under our names. This means my housemates, James and Harley, and myself. Unfortunately Habib has left our place, but still lives very close to us. I’m glad our old flat mates keep visiting us 🙂

Now we are the new tenants, we might even get the house repainted and newly carpeted. We will hear from the owner soon. Not only our rent is 35% less, but it also gives us more protection from getting thrown out or faced with unlimited increases of rent. The owner of our complex also approved bike parking in the first car park bay under the large shed. That means we can stall 10 bikes protected from rain and other bad weather conditions. With this transformation more space will be available in the garden. The clothes lines are moving to make room for our garden! Herb patch and new flower beds are already finished. With a bit of effort we should everything sorted out by the end of August; soon to be followed by an inaugurated house party!

Parties all the time?

So we haven’t got our own house party yet, still we got quiet some invites from friends to join their parties. So what happened? The last few months I have been hosting couchsurfers which turned out to be a great way of networking. Some of the Couchsurfers enrolled the university’s exchange program and stay around for at least one semester. As a matter of fact these students seem to throw in parties all the time. Also I’m very happy with the fact that colleagues (other PhD students) now join weekly events too. Meetings are now in our favourite bar in Northbridge: Bird. They got a great court yard, $5 beers, and live music on Thu till Sat. In Australia the excuse to meet friends while having a beer seems to work after all.

The unversity clubs (Perth International, Postgraduate Association, and The Guild) organise almost weekly events. So uni is in full swing. I discovered that I did’nt get all these updates of ongoing activities as they made a mistake with my email subscription. So I missed out on most stuff during last semester, so I got to make up for that 🙂
